31 Photos of January

I was inspired to take the Instagram Photo a day Challenge for January. I found the list here of subjects for each day. It was such a fun project and made me look at every day through the lens of a new subject. Here is my finished collection:

Valentine Favors

Delaney and I spent time today making our first of many Valentine treats. First we made arrow snacks that we saw the idea for in Family Fun Magazine. We used Pretzel Sticks and Brachs candy gummy hearts. One bag of gummy hearts made about 36 arrows.

For each one, you need a whole heart and one heart that you cut a triangle out of to make a tale shape for your arrow .

And this is how we bagged them up. I got these stickers printed from Pear Tree Greetings. We put them on solid card stock and stapled them onto the clear bags. These will be for Delaney's four year old class at school.

Next we made some favors for Ford's class. We have bags of crayons and pieces of crayons laying around. I found this great idea for what to do with them on Pinterest.

I found the heart ice cube trays at Ikea. We filled them up and put them in the oven for 15 minutes at 250 degrees. Let them cool and then pop them out of the silicone mold. They turned out great. We bagged them the same way we did for the arrow treats. But we did add a note to the back of each that they are not edible just in case the three year olds in Ford's class think they look good enough to eat.

Eating Well

We've been eating all healthy around here lately. I've cut out most fun things like glutton and sugar and dairy and meat, etc. etc. etc. Basically I'm eating vegetables and fruits, nuts and some legumes. This has forced me to get very creative in the kitchen. I've been recipe searching all over the place and have written a few myself. It has been a month of much experimentation as to achieve every new texture and taste I can with very limited ingredients. I do not do well with repetition!

I have been wanting to try cooking Celeriac for a while having eaten it out at restaurants but never made it for myself. All the recipes I found either used butter or cream or something I can't eat right now so I made one up. This soup was the biggest hit of anything I've made this month. Even my 4 year old loved it!

1 celery root (celeriac) peeled and cubed
2 small apples peeled and cubed
1 turnip peeled and cubed
1 box organic vegetable broth
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
walnuts
truffle oil

Put all the above ingredients, minus the walnuts and the truffle oil) in a stock pot and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 30-45 minutes or until all the ingredients are very tender. Strain out the veggies and apples but reserve the liquid. Blend the solid ingredients til very smooth adding the liquid back one ladle at a time until the consistency you want is achieved. This will use most of your liquid. Ladle into soup bowls and drizzle with truffle oil. Top with the walnuts and serve immediately.

I'll share more recipes later. Back to the kitchen for me!

Thrift Finds

My grandmother gave everyone in our family no chance of escaping the love of a good find for cheap! She drug all of us around our whole little lives to garage sales and thrift stores. We are all bargain shoppers and better for it.

There are more thrift stores than ever right now because of the economy and my mom and I frequent several in Roswell. On Wednesdays, it is 1/2 price day for seniors so I always shop with her. I thought I'd dress up my kids in our favorite recent finds so you can see just how great the stuff is out there for less than $2. Everything they are wearing in all the following photos was bought at a thrift store except their shoes (Target gets credit for those). And every single item on their bodies was less than $2 a piece. Some of the items had never been worn and still had the tags hanging on them.

For sure, I will never buy jeans for my kids anywhere but the thrift stores again. The selection is huge and my kids go through jeans faster than any other clothing item.

As our shoot continued, the rain started and the kids got tired so here are a few more items I've found minus the bodies!

Welcome 2012!

Brandon and I have a New Year's Tradition. We see as many movies as we can in 24 hours in the theater. Last year we made it through 5. We use this as our chance to catch up on everything we've missed before awards season begins. So, since my parent's will be entertaining my kids for New Year's Eve, we decided to have our celebration a day early and in the middle of the day! Plus, Delaney has been practicing her backward countdown skills and was excited to show them off.

I don't know where Delaney saw these or got the idea but she has been talking about clock cookies for New Year's "where the hands point straight up" so we enhanced these store bought black and white cookies for the event. She also wanted some juice that "tickles her tongue" so we drank sparkling grape juice out of "fancy glasses".

We added sparklers to our cupcakes and spent the morning making construction paper confetti. It was the highlight of the party by far.

I didn't want to leave these awesome New Year's Eve earrings out of my post. They are the quintessential party earrings I am thrilled to say that my husband got me for Christmas. I can't wait to wear them out for our marathon movie date!

Happy 2012 to You All!!
